Running – Day five
Well after a night of rather mundane but mildly interesting dreaming I got up at around 7:10 and went out for my first run in weeks.
Now I am a bit of a runner, but over the years I’ve been pretty complacent. I can run, I can run well and I don’t have to train that hard. Some people I know run all year but never get to the speeds I’m running (what a big headed tosser I can be) so that’s led to me being a bit lazy. Rather than running all year I tend to just run in the run up to the Great North Run that I’ve done oodles of times now. What I need to be doing is running regularly and getting rid of some of my paunch.
Anyway pretty early up, a coffee with a teaspoon of honey and it was off out to Seaton Carew in my heavy weather gear. Looking out the window the weather looked a bit bad but I have to remember that the Seaton run is up and down the exposed seafront and it can get a bit nippy.
Sheesh, was it bad, running out of Seaton it was a real nasty pasty head wind, it was awful one for my first run in ages and on the back of smoking it wasn’t doubly good at all. I was really very slow, slower than I’d been in absolutely ages and it was really cutting into my lungs. I reckon that just about the best thing you can do a couple of days after stopping smoking is to go out for a run, it really scours and scrubs the lungs out in a way that no other exercise can do, add to this the wind factor and it accounts for my cough that lasted a half hour after the run.
Anyway to give you an idea of how bad the wind was my run out of 2.33 miles was timed at 21 minutes and 14 seconds (how long) and my return with the wind on my back – while I was knackered aftter all that running into the wind – was still 2.33 miles and timed at 19 minutes and 31 seconds.
On my run I always try to be polite, I said hello to lots of people I got some replies, I was sometimes ignored – boo hiss – once because someone was wearing phones – ok I retract the boo hiss on that one – someone said hello to me before I did to them and one bloke gave me a wave
Anyway things getting better and my first fitness task is in box.
